It is closely related to Select Book 27. an edition of which was published in 1993 in the Gloucestershire Record Series as The Military Survey of Gloucestershire. 1522 It was drawn up when Henry VIII was preparing no go no war in France. Organised place by place. it is a record firstly of the forced loan of 1523 paid by the lay inhabitants of Gloucestershire of middlling wealth and secondly of the military capability of the county. The loan referred to as the second prest. was payable to the Crown by men and women whose wealth was in goods which had been assessed the year before at ?5 or move but less than ?20. or in a relatively few instances in land worth 20s. a year or more. Those with goods assessed at ?0 or more had already been charged for the “first prest”. The loan was paid at the rate of two shillings in the pound on both the supposed value of goods and the annual value of land. The list of those who had paid the loan is followed by lists of men fit for military service described as “able” distinguishing those with anmour or harness and those without harmess (LL)
