About the book >.>.> The Whitworth was pleased to acquire three years of Pavel B?chler’s Diary in 2011 and this catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition Idle Thoughts which shows these thirty-six drawings alongside a further twenty-four i.e. two other years of writing that are still in the artist’s possession. It was B?chler who called them Idle Thoughts we would never have been so presumptuous but of course there is nothing idle about them. Each drawing is made from a month of daily entries written on one page many times. Once one year of pages was completed a catalogue was published giving B?chler twelve offset-litho prints to write another year of entries upon – and so the process continued. Through these drawings B?chler gives us everything in words – all of his thoughts worries and delights – but he obliterates every detail through the addition of more and yet more. As he says his art is ‘making nothing happen’ and the nothing that happens here is the transformation of the written word into a drawing. The supremacy of the word is overwritten and replaced by the primacy of drawing B?chler’s fluid lines in pencil and biro being rehabilitated as the drawings that they always wanted to be. (LL)
