About the book >.>.> Discovering quilts was a life-changing event for me. I went to an exhibit of antique quilts at my local art museum and it was as though I had “a calling” which I gladly accepted with enthusiasm and determination. I couldn’t get enough and I began studying old quilts for ideas and then tried to make them. Initially with very few exceptions I liked ev- ery quilt I saw but eventually I realized that the quilts that really tantalized me were the unortho- dox quilts-the ones that held surprises. These quilts didn’t have obvious explanations. They didn’t appear to be made from commercial patterns nor did they pay any attention whatso- ever to the contemporary “rules and regulations” set forth by the quilt “authorities” of the day. The CRAZY COTTON QUILT TOP shown on page 7 is an example of the free-spirited quilts that I found intriguing. Because there is more to see and more to figure out quilts like this hold my at tention longer than their predictable well-orga nized color-coordinated pattern-based uptown sisters. (LL)
