About the book >.>.> This volume is the eleventh in the series Guides to Sources for British History and the second part of a guide that has set out to describe the most extensive and important family and estate collections of the United Kingdom. These accumulations of legal business personal political and other papers represent some of the country’s richest private archives. Many of the 118 collections in the guide have been known to the Commission since the 1870s but the collections themselves have grown over the last hundred years and discoveries of hitherto unknown or unrecorded material have continued to be made. Although firmly based on the resources of the National Register of Archives this guide also represents the results of much supplementary research and prints a considerable body of information not previously available to scholars. This work would not have been possible without the support of owners of privately-held manuscript collections who generously made papers available gave permission to publish and in many cases made helpful comments on drafts. For help and hospitality the Commission is indebted both to them and to a number of country house librarians and archivists on whose expert knowledge it was fortunately able to draw.
