About the book >.>.> The village was once an important administrative centre which gave its name to the Hundred. From the ninth century it was a royal manor until it was acquired by the de Mohuns and then the Luttrell family from nearby Dunster Castle. A recent archaeological dig to the east of the fifteenth-century church uncovered significant finds dating from the Dark Ages. Farming has always been at the heart of Carhampton’s economy and a number of farms bear names of Saxon origin. The village itself is a mixture of late medieval thatched cottages and more modern houses many built on the old orchards for which the village was renowned. The custom of wassailing the apple trees in hopes of a good crop is observed each year on Old Twelfth Night. This book outlines the history of this enig- matic village and in words and pictures cel- ebrates its community life and its resilience through challenging times. (SP)
