About the book >.>.> FERRERS of Tamworth Castle. It was in the late 18th Century that CHARLES BOWYERS ADDERLEY built the HALL his great nephew became the first BARON NORTON a Parliamentary representative for thirty seven years was elevated to the peerage and the House of Lords. It was during this period in 1850 that the constitution of NEW ZEALAND was formulated in the peace and beauty of this lovely place. LORD NORTON became Under Secretary of State for the Colonies and President of the Board of Trade. In April 1890 a fire almost destroyed the Hall work on restoration must have been completed in good time and to a high standard as Mr. GLADSTONE who was a guest here in 1895 commented that “it was a fragrant place in my recollection”. Another visitor declared “This is a large house of extreme comfort and its owner only looking sixty but is ’82’ is one of the most agreeable hosts in England”. NORTON died in 1905 a nonagenarian widower his eldest son succeeded to the title and it was he who sold the estate to Birmingham Corporation for development by the CITY OF BIRMINGHAM ELECTRIC SUPPLY DEPARTMENT (C.B.E.S.D.). Under the direction of the Cotswold architect Ernest Barnsley between 1919 and 1921 the HALL was demolished and two storeys of it were rebuilt near the village of COATES – Cirencester. Legend has it that the ground floor went to America. (LL)
