About the book >.>.> American folk art was “discovered” in the 1920s and the first exhibition devoted to it was held in 1924 at the Whitney Studio Club in New York City. The Studio Club established by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1918 as an informal center for artists had grown out of the Friends of the Young Artists which Mrs. Whitney had formed three years earlier and from the Studio Club in turn grew the Whitney Museum of American Art which was founded in 1930. There is a beautiful coincidence in the fact that a major exhibition of American folk art is presented by the Whitney Museum just fifty years later. Thousands of examples of American folk art have been found in these fifty years a great deal of research has been done regarding them and the people who created them seminars have been held and courses of study given and a whole reference library of books catalogues monographs and articles has been published. This is a fitting moment to consider again the scope and character of American folk art to review the growth of interest in it and to attempt a revaluation. (MP)
