About the book >.>.> One of the books I con- sulted in preparation for my trip was British author Jan Read’s tiny Simon & Schuster Pocket Guide to Spanish Wines-which in- cludes brief notes on Spain’s regional gas- tronomy. In his chapter on Catalonia Read recommends among other eating places the dining room of the Motel (now Hotel) Ampur- d?n in Figueres describing it as a “highly so- phisticated restaurant started by Josep Mer- cader founder of the new Catalan cuisine.’ These few words were in a sense directly re- sponsible for the existence of the volume at hand. My interest in other Mediterranean cui- sines had by this time taught me inter alia that the cuisine of Catalonia had ancient roots and was still full of undisguised references to the cooking of medieval times and even to that of the Romans who had once occupied this part of Spain-and thus the notion that there might be a new Catalan culinary idiom pre- sumably inspired at least in part by the tradi tions of the distant past fascinated me. I thought it might make a very good story in fact and knowing nothing more about it than what Read had so offhandedly betrayed. (SP)
