About the book >.>.> The catalogue seeks to arrange the entries according to the estates to which the property belonged and within the estates to the separate inheritances which constituted the estates. Much the largest group of deeds relates to the Mowbray estate which after the death of the infant Anne Mowbray only child of the last Mowbray dike of Norfolk was divided between the sons of her great-grandfather’s sisters John Howard duke of Norfolk and William Berkeley. William created marquess of Berkeley died in 1492 without surviving issue having settled most of his estates on the king Henry VII in tail male. William’s brother and heir Maurice recovered much of the property although it was only with the failure of Henry’s male issue with the death of King Edward VI in 1553 that the Berkeleys’ ancestral estate reverted to the family.
