About the book >.>.> And it is argued that the styles of the sculpture express rather directly the commercial character of Europe at this time. Chapter V goes on to sketch a particular problem of the period a tension between the sense of group and the sense of individual prowess which arises in various forms in the sculpture and elsewhere: both ‘German art’ and the individual style were being discovered at the time and both notions seem registered in the style of the carvings. Chapter VI points to a few of the visual skills and habits indigenous to Germany around 1500 and takes the opportunity to develop some period terms for the description of the art: one of the problems in looking at the sculpture is that the critical concepts inherent in our own Franco- Italian tradition do not always meet its interest and it is helpful to supplement them with some concepts proper to the period itself. Chapter VII looks at a handful of carvings in a more extended way. It is not designed as a demonstration of the points made earlier in the book; on the contrary one hopes it will soften the schematic character of the general account by setting individuals against it. In particular the last of the carvings considered Hans Leinberger’s Virgin and Child in Landshut largely rebuffs the equipment the book has assembled. (MP)
