About the book >.>.> The author remembers soldiers billeted in the stables during the first World War when the family lived at Durwards near Kelvedon in Essex; not being allowed to accompany his older brother and sister to the sight of a Zeppelin crash in 1916 because he was too young at four years old; the weekend visits of his father Roland who was working as unpaid Private Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty having been invalided out of the Army and of the utter joy of being taken for pony cart rides down the Essex lanes with that adorable man. He remembers also a special relationship with his sister Joy which has survived for a lifetime his love of Nanny Newall and the excitement when he was given a black cocker spaniel puppy for his sixth binhday present. He called him Robert and loved him dearly in spite of months away at school which caused separation and lack of personal attention so vital in the life of a spaniel. (LL)
