About the book >.>.> In dedicating this book to my colleagues in the Manchester Facult of Theology I include past members of the Faculty as well as presen ones and think with particular gratitude of three. First Professor H. H. Rowley Editor of Nelson’s Library of Theology who honoured me with the invitation to make this contribution to the series and has waited patiently for its too tardy delivery. Second my predecessor the late Professor T. W. Manson. My indebtedness to him will be clear enough in the chapters on Jesus and Paul. The temptation to quote him at length is always strong for he had the gift of putting into telling and memorable language views to which I wholeheartedly subscribe but could never express so happily as he did. I have in mind for example his insistence that Jesus was conceivably at least as interesting for his own sake to people in the first century as to historians the twentieth and that the Gospels are more satisfactorily studied as historical documents concerning him than as psychological case-material concerning the early Christians. Third my present colleague Professor S. G. F. Brandon. I cannot think that everything in this book will command his agreement but it owes more to him than he could realize. To be so closely associated as I have been for nine years with the author of Jesus and the Zealots and The Fall of Jerusalem and the Christian Church is a privilege of immense value to a student and teacher of New Testament literature and Christian origins.
