About the book >.>.> If you are expecting a gory and graphic account of the battles of the Second World War disappointment is in store. This is the a story of the men behind the battle scenes and of their personal battles not those of the generals or strategy tactics. Countless books films stories and records have been and still are employed narrating and depicting the tragic and horrific events which occurred in that arena of conflict. I have attempted to show what war meant to an ordinary group of men in extraordinary situations and places. No one who belonged to this group was decorated for valour or heroism possibly because the tasks undertaken by them in various theatres of war would not call for gallantry or nerve. This work involved driving water tankers to and fro across the arid wastes of the North African Desert and later transporting numerous loads and supplies in Europe including Italy and Germany. It seemed a sound idea to write a book enlightening the public particularly those whose only sight or knowledge of the war has been gained from either books often tactical but not very informa- tive or else grossly distorted films on subjects that are seldom men- tioned in manuals of the Second World War.
