About the book >.>.> Unfortunately the media and to some extent the protagonists them- selves have bought into the view that homosexuality is a reality and concern largely in the global North indeed some would maintain an obsession amongst ‘liberal’ Christians there. However as the following essays show homosexuality is a global phenomenon and always has been present in all cultures and religions even where it is anathematised by the culture or religion. One has only to browse the internet to discover Jewish Muslim Buddhist Hindu and even Mormon Seventh Day Adventist and Jehovah’s Witness websites for their homosexual members. Many of the following chapters make it clear that homosexual orientation and practice is not foreign to Islam Hinduism and other religious traditions Some of the authors in this book write from within cultures that from before Christianity had some positive assessment of homosexual orien tation and practice (for example Oceanic and Native North American cultures and of course Asia). The authors here encourage the church to build upon these cultural gifts rather than destroy them. Nor is what is developing among lesbian and gay Christians in the global South a weak clone of the North American and European ‘gay liberation’ movement yet another product of western imperialism. (This analysis of gay and lesbian Christians in the global North is also of course highly problematic) Rather emerging lesbian and gay theo logies (indeed practice) are highly contextual while not without reference to what is happening in the global North and the broader biblical and theological traditions of the churches concerned. The rise of new churches for example in Hong Kong and Singapore discussed in this book focused on the hopes experiences and needs of their lesbian (SP)
