About the book >.>.> The origins of this report lie in two convictions. First that a coherent theology of ministry should reflect what the church is called to reveal about Christ and not merely about either the historical practice of the church or a limitedly functional understanding of what Christian ministers do. And second that the ministry of the deacon is foundational for all Christian ministry and should be reinvigorated in the life of the church as a whole and in the diocese in particular. What are the implications of this for the way in which we grow and select ministers? What are the criteria by which we should assess a distinctively diaconal call to ministry? What kind of distinctive formation should deacons receive before any thought is given as to whether they might also be candidates for priestly ministry? These were some of the initial questions in our minds when the report was commissioned. At the heart of this report lies a theology of ministry derived from reflection on the work of Christ and the way in which his coming among us and his death and resurrection have shaped the church since. This is the theology of ministry that we have worked with over these recent years when we have explored a renewed pattern of vocation which has led to our Ordained Local Ministry (OLM) scheme. It has also had some influence on the early drafts of the revised Ordinal (LL)
