About the book >.>.> These poems have been written from time to time since the author’s seventeenth year. They have been arranged for the purposes of this book in more or less chronological order. Quite a large proportion therefore date from before the author was twenty years old. They were written at the instigation of his brother and sister who had just begun writing. The title of his first book The People’s Palace published in 1918 will prove his political beliefs at that time. Between then and now there have been intervals of as much as four years when he has written no poetry. But in general this book may be said to be a consistent effort extending over half his lifetime. It contains all or nearly all that he would wish to be preserved. When thinking over this it is to the example of his sister above all that he would repay his debt. These poems were written to give her pleasure and this must be at once their excuse and their recommendation. The author begs to express his thanks to Messrs. Basil Blackwell of Oxford for their kind permission to reprint poems from The People’s Palace; and also to Messrs. Faber and Faber who hold the copyright of his Canons of Giant Art and have given permission to reprint for this present volume. Exalt the Eglantine was published by The Fleuron. All the other books from which poems are included were published by Messrs. Duckworth. One or two short poems are printed here for the first time. (SP)
