About the book >.>.> I was very lucky. My parents exposed me to art early and often and when I wanted to spend a significant amount of time drawing in my bedroom I was encouraged. I watched my father (a specialist in the restoration of old photographs and a Sunday painter) cut out pictures from various publications and put them into manila folders with categories including faces animals still life and sports. He called these his “swipe files” and he used them to inspire and inform his pictorial efforts. When I came across the collages of Romare Bearden Max Ernst Hannah Hoch and then later the photo-generated works by Barbara Kruger and Mark Tansey I realized that scavenging and saving images was an invaluable practice. My own daily ritual of pasting choice items gathered from magazines newspapers and journals into black-bound sketchbooks provides me with several pleasures from the physicality of arranging things on a page and gluing them down to the space-saving satisfaction of keeping a “best of” collection in a con- densed and manageable size. One of the things I appreciate most about curating is the hunter-gatherer aspect and the combining of like elements or the pairing of strange bedfellows to establish new relationships and unpredictable outcomes. At The Cooper Union and at Rutgers University. I had the privilege to study with professors including Dore Ashton Leon Golub Hans Haacke Reuben Kadish Irving Petlin Martha Rosler and Jack Whitten; add to these august figures the ongoing presence of my artist friends and our seemingly endless conversations with bottomless cups of coffee. The distinct energies and ethics of these individu- als and the heady period in New York in the late 1970s and 1980s constituted my truest academy. (LL)
