About the book >.>.> It was not more than 100 years ago that the first Europeans discovered the great lakes of Africa but since that time there have been numerous expeditions and quantities of scientific studies dealing with Lakes Victoria Nyasa (Malawi) and Tanganyika. Fore- most of the scientists writing about these lakes are Dr. Ethelwynn Trewavas of the British Museum and her associate Dr. P. H. Greenwood Dr. Geoffrey Fryer and Dr. Max Poll. The fishes of Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika are of special interest to aquarists because there are hundreds of interesting cichlids which are found only in these lakes; many of these cichlids are richly colored and have interesting feeding and breeding habits. Both of these lakes are being exploited for their aquarium fishes by active dependable collectors who have long experience in fish collecting and who practice sound principles of conservation.Specifically Pierre Brichard working out of Bujumbura Burundi sends out about 100 boxes (about 5000 fishes) per week of mostly Tanganyikan cichlids; in Malawi Peter Davies along with his wife Henny ships about the same quantity of mainly Malawian cichlids. It is to these two gentlemen that the aquarium world owes a great deal of thanks for without their perseverance and dedication few fishes if any would ever grace our tanks. (SP)
