One can never appeal to tradition alone. As long as a religion is alive as long at any rate as Christianity is alive it cannot affirm tradition and its authority without at the same time conjuring up the spirit which receives this and is in accord with it. Both are bound together and must always remain in their mutual relation if tradition is not to become arid and lose its sensitivity to life and if the spirit is really to be one of renewal and not merely destructive alienated from its origins. The recog- nition of this necessary harmony formulated in such general terms is of course not confined to the theological and ecclesiastical sphere. It determines with varying degrees of clarity the cultural sentiment of the whole of the historically conscious West. But that does not make it any the less universally human or self-evident.
