About the book >.>.> Whether a direct approach would have had the desired effect it is impossible to say. It is easy to make out a case for the negative answer. Successful negotiations of any kind can be conducted only on the basis of mutual trust. We have already remarked Archbishop Benson’s deep-seated distrust of the Roman Catholic Church. To this must be added the corresponding hostility of Cardinal Vaughan to any such approach. And yet distrust can be overcome by generosity humility and goodwill on the other side. This was abun- dantly demonstrated by the pontificate of Pope John XXIII. Could Leo XIII in the wholly different climate of the 1890s have made the kind of approach which would have overcome Benson’s distrust (as well as Vaughan’s) and allowed a response to be made in the spirit manifested throughout by the Archbishop of York? 35 We cannot say. However a letter written by Benson to Halifax some months later indicates that the archbishop would not have rejected out of hand a really sincere and generous offer of joint conversations (SP)
