In a period of universal shortage a consign- ment of empty beer tins had been filled with marmalade. ‘And our wives in England’ the Colonel said ‘would be delighted to find marmalade where they expected beer. I only drink beer when I am thirsty. But ‘beer night’ in Baghdad was the high point of my week. Fine beer it was too specially (SP)
