About the book >.>.> In fact if for any reason a trap site is not used for a season its further use is cancelled by the Bureau. The primary interest of the Bureau’s wardens in the pirate is when he tries to seine in the restricted spawning streams. This leaves the canneries to battle the trap pirate alone with no law to hack them up other than that against trespassing. In an effort to discourage pirating the canneries hire watchmen to guard the traps against pirates then hire watchmen to watch the watchmen. They charter patrol planes and patrol boats to cruise the traps Pinkerton men work under cover among crews on traps and on the boats. There are two-way radios aboard the traps the tenders and at the cannery. Code is used in all reports concerning fish in the trap. A cannery owner explained this cloak-and-dagger code: “If a watchman called and said there were fifty thousand fish in the trap every seiner and pirate within a hundred miles would hear it. We would have seiners lined up three deep before the trap’s lead taking every fish that came by. (SP)
