About the book >.>.> Public house checks remain one of the few series within the field of Somerset numismatics not to have been published. The trade tokens of the 17th 18th and 19th centuries have all been dealt with in some detail (see bibliography). Some of the county’s checks have been listed notably in Neumann 1858-65 Batty 1868-84 Guest 1930 Bell 1975 and Todd 1979 but this is the first attempt to treat them comprehensively. The pieces included come largely from collections in public institutions the majority being held by the Somerset County Museum Taunton the Victoria Art Gallery Bath and the British Museum. Other museums and private collectors have though made significant contributions. While every effort has been made to make the catalogue as complete as possible some checks have undoubtedly evaded our search. If new pieces come to light in sufficient numbers it is hoped that a supplement can be produced. With this in mind the Keeper of Archaeology at the Somerset County Museum would be pleased to hear of unrecorded specimens from the pre-1974 county of Somerset. (LL)
