The miner lives on bread and bread rationing even with his increased allowance hit him well and truly below the belt while the nation-wide shortage of sustaining protein foods has affected coal production to an incalculable extent. On our journey through the roads Tom had quoted to me lines from two other Toms the poets Gray and Hood; as we sat down to ‘bread’ I realized that these were but grains from the vast granary of literature he has read. We talked over well- remembered books the works of the poets historians and novelists of Shakespeare and Hardy of Tawney and Trevelyan and much else beside for Tom is also a naturalist who loves to watch the badgers in the woods and tells me that last year he saw a kingfisher on Cannop Ponds-a thousand feet above our heads. There is little natural history here below though festoons of froth-like fungus appear on some of the pit props which the miners call nothing for it simply disappears like foam when pressed in the hand.
