About the book >.>.> What is now a peaceful river valley once echoed to the clamour of water powered tilt hammers wreathed in choking smoke from smelting hearths and furnaces. This site was once described in the eighteenth century as “looking into the mouth of hell”. The reference was to the Fussells Ironworks in the Wadbury Valley near Frome in Somerset where high quality edge tools were manufactured and exported world wide. The Fussells enterprise spanned all stages of the Industrial Revolution. This book traces the rise of the Fussell family the development of the Ironworks and its eventual demise. The first edition of “Fussells Ironworks Mells” was published in 1996 and reprinted in 1998. Although the main text in this new edition remains largely unaltered there are now 22 photographs. 10 illustrations an additional appendix and updated footnotes. (LL)
