About the book >.>.> It was not surprising that the particular judgment of the individual soul at death became more important than the Last Judgment and that the future of the individual was treated in isolation from that of the world. An image such as the renewing fire of judgment which was originally associa ted with the Last Day later became linked with the particular judgment after death and so contributed to the development of theories of purgatory: the purifying fire through which all had to pass who wished to achieve the sanctity necessary for communion with God. The judgment at the Last Day was reduced to a declaratory judgment on the individual when the sentence already passed at the cular judgment was made fully known. (SP)
