About the book >.>.> When introducing earlier books in this series I have been able to claim that there was very little in print on the subject but with farm vehicles the situation is different. George Sturt gave a detailed account of the practices of a Surrey firm in The Wheelwright’s Shop’ and since then James Arnold Geraint Jenkins John Vince Jocelyn Bailey and others have added to the literature on farm carts and waggons in most cases writing from a basis of original research. Excellent though many of these books are they do concentrate on one aspect of the subject that is the design of the traditional village made farm waggon. With the forty or so distinctive varieties of traditional farm waggon and the ‘folk art’ which went into the design and embellishment of these waggons they are certainly a subject worthy of study. However there is another side to the coin. It comes as a shock to read in some of the articles reproduced here that the waggons we admire so much are cumbersome relics which ought not to be allowed on the farm. From the early 1800’s agricultural writers were urging farmers to use one horse carts in place of their waggons and heavy tumbrils and this theme occurs again and again in the extracts I have reprinted.
