About the book >.>.> There remains ample scope for discovery in the region however by visiting little-studied districts or by visiting well-known bird sites during different con- ditions or times of year from other watchers. Knowledge of the distribution and movements of birds can progress only if someone is prepared to try out ideas. It is not enough to know that a locality is good for seeing birds. At most bird- watching sites factors such as tides and winds as well as season are of paramount importance in planning your visit. Much valuable information is obtained from county bird reports but these assume quite a high degree of knowledge. It is not their function to explain in detail the background behind records or to cover ancillary factors such as timing a wader-watch for high tide (vital if time and effort are not to be wasted). Birdwatching visitors with limited time to spare will find our treatment of these topics particularly useful in plan- ning their stay. County bird reports which list what is known to have occurred within each county during any one year are produced by the Devon and Cornwall Bird Watching and Preservation Societies two parallel organisations through which regular birdwatching excursions take place in both counties with local experts in charge. The national Royal Society for the Protection of Birds also has branches throughout the country which are particularly helpful to children. (LL)
