About the book >.>.> As you know the set book for this unit is John Shearman’s Mannerism a section of which you have read for Unit 5. I think the best way to approach this week’s work on painting in Florence and Rome c.1520-70 is to begin by re-reading Shearman’s first chapter and answering the questions below. Throughout this unit however I shall refer to passages in Mannerism so it will obviously be to your advantage to have read the entire book before you go any further. Mannerism is a work about which art historians still argue excitedly although it was first published in 1967 and the paper from which it grew was read at an art-historical congress in 1961. It is a brilliant attempt to bring back to life the values of a period long past. Shearman strips away layers of anachronistic interpretations (see below pp. 9 10) imposed upon many sixteenth-century works of art and tries to look at them afresh with the eyes of sixteenth-century artists and their clients. He brings together evidence from literature and music as well as contemporary writings on art to make his point: there is a sixteenth- century style growing out of but distinct from the style of the High Renais- sance; it is characterized by artificiality.
