About the book >.>.> This book is an introduction to designing for stained glass. It is directed to those people who have mastered the basic skills of glassworking but who have little or no formal art training. It is the book that I wanted when I first started out. The world of stained glass has changed dramat- ically since I first learned the basic skills of the craft. There now exists a bounty of tools materials gallery shows courses and books hitherto unavailable. Stained glass is also now one of the top five favorite American crafts (and 60/40 solder has more than quadrupled in price). Considering this fact the ab- sence of information on how to approach glass de- signing is curious. The subject is not difficult to grasp nor does a special guild stand guard over sacred secrets yet the void persists. There are many ways to get around the old “I can’t draw a straight line” syndrome that keeps one chained to pattern books and it really is more en- joyable to fabricate your own designs. However since everyone does learn by imitation and repeti- tion eighty-four fairly complex designs have been included in Chapter 2 for your study and practice. The term complex does not mean that the individual shapes that comprise each design are difficult to cut. Part of the original premise for this book (and a premise put to the contributing artists) was to offer patterns that were easy to cut but would represent a major project. There already are a half dozen pat- tern books for trinkets and no need to add to the list. (LL)
