About the book >.>.> The market town of South Molton has T been a focus for its farming hinter- land for the last 1000 years. Established as a town in the twelfth century it became a borough with its own Mayor and Corporation at the end of the six- teenth century. Proud of its past the town is a popular place for those visiting North Devon on holiday and maintains a strong character of its own. The Book of South Molton combines a narrative history of the town’s long past with a strong selection of reminiscences. Many people have been interviewed who were brought up and lived in the town over the last 80 years and a collection of more than 200 photographs and draw- ings gathered together from across the community illustrates the changing face of the town over the last century. Jonathan Edmunds has written a number of local histories over the last 20 years. During his career as a teacher he worked in Essex Staffordshire and Oxfordshire as well as Devon and produced works about the different communities in which he worked. He believes that local history is a valuable way in which to foster a sense of community and feels that personal memories can so easily be forgotten if there is no outlet for them in books such as those in the Community History Series.
