About the book >.>.> WHAT picture of the Church in the past fifty years even of the past twenty-five years will the historian of the future draw? People say that history has increased in speed and in all respects the saying is true. It is as if time had developed an enlarged capacity. Life becomes more and more encumbered and man begins to lose his head as he sees all that has become possible to him as he sees his boundaries overstepped one by one. He is carried along so fast so impetuously that no longer does he find the necessary leisure for asking himself where he is going. The means swamp and engross him; he becomes heed- less forgetful; and he is frightened. The Church however cannot avoid questioning herself for in this debacle-in the original sense of the word used to desig- nate in the far North the breaking-up of the ice on the rivers in the spring-in this debacle the Church knows that her mission is constant and she is confident that she can sustain it; but as she questions the Church knows that she must as it were shake herself out of a dream and tear herself at any price from a lethargy that would ruin her. She feels she must urge on her children helping them to recover from the depths of their being the riches they have inherited from her. (LL)
