About the book >.>.> Born in Bath John Owen has had an interest in railways from an early age. With frequent visits to relations in Exeter it was inevitable that countless hours would be spent at the city’s St. Davids station. A fascination with the characterful auto trains shuffling in and out of the bay platform led to an exploratory trip to Thorverton the farthest point on the Exe Valley line that funds would allow! An invitation to visit the signal box marked the beginning of a happy association with the Branch in its last few years. Numerous visits to Thorverton were followed by a desire to get to know the whole line resulting in a familiarity with the operation and personalities of a hard-working and scenically delightful railway. After leaving university teaching posts in Manchester and Stockport took John away from the West Country in body though not spirit. Returning as often as possible it became evident that the Line was still held in great affection by railwaymen past and present as well as by many local people. It seemed fitting therefore to under- take a detailed description of the Line’s life and times in this its centenary year. (MP)
