Now America was eager to welcome him and he in turn arrived with high expectations … only to be disappointed. Americans were coarse cocky and money- loving obtrusive vain and ignorant. He reported one of them boasting “Our people don’t think of poetry sir. Dollars banks and cotton are our books” and Dickens agreed: “They certainly are in one sense; for a lower average of general information than exists in this country on all other topics it would be very hard to find.” American men chewed tobacco and spit everywhere incessantly. In four months of touring from Boston to St. Louis he found little to admire much to dislike. (SP)
