About the book >.>.> This is a book about relational work and the disappearing acts that render it invisible in today’s workplace. It is written for the many people who find that the off-line backstage or collaborative work they do and the relational skills this kind of work requires are not recognized or re- warded at work. But that is only part of the story because at its heart this is a book about why this kind of work-what I call relational practice-is “women’s work” and why that makes the story of its disappearance so much more interesting. It owes much to the good nature and the intellectual and emotional support of others. First and foremost it owes an intellectual debt to the work of Jean Baker Miller. It is often said that all research is autobio- graphical and if that is true this book is a good example. In many ways it is a book about my own journey in reclaiming and revaluing relational work a journey that began many years ago when I first read her book Toward a New Psychology of Women. The ideas in that book energized me in a way few things have since. I am deeply grateful to her not only for her intellectual insight and determination to challenge the status quo by listening closely to women’s experience and articulating it as knowl- edge but also for her willingness to communicate these revolutionary ideas simply making them accessible to the likes of me who at the time was a young stay-at-home mother of three. The study at the core of the book was driven by my desire to put to work what I learned from that book. The energy that drove the study’s design was fueled by a desire to continue learning from women and a hunger to right injustice by adding what I thought was missing-feminine wisdom and experience to organizational knowledge. It is interesting (LL)
