About the book >.>.> Military strategists expected immediate German air strikes that would kill half a million and wound another million before the end of the year. In response to these forecasts volunteers filled sandbags from Somerset’s beaches to build blast barriers. In the streets air-raid wardens kept watch to see that lights were blacked out to baffle enemy bombers. Householders criss-crossed windows with sticky paper tape to hold glass splintered in a bomb explosion. Pillar-box tops were painted a bilious yellow that would turn colour to indicate a poison gas attack. Newspapers ran articles on how to construct air-raid shelters in back gardens. From bomb-threatened London Somerset looked safe. Cooper’s Company Secondary School left Stepney to find refuge in Frome Grammar School while hundreds of children moved to Wells from London’s Isle of Dogs. Sidcot School and Winscombe Woodborough Elementary School accommodated classes from Regent Polytechnic. (LL)
