About the book >.>.> To describe the creation of jewellery by lost wax or cire-perdue as a new modern craft would seem to be a contradiction in terms as this form of casting has been traced back over 3000 years B.C. Yet it is only within the last few decades that the process has be- come more widely used in this country and even then only infrequently outside the Jewellery and Dental trades and a few specialised Colleges of Art. Basically the process is a simple one. A facsimile (the pattern) of the piece to be cast is first modelled in wax and is then surrounded by a liquid slurry of refractory plaster called investment (see Fig. 1). When set the investment usually surrounded in a metal cylinder is heated to melt out the wax and leave the mould cavity. (SP)
