About the book >.>.> In October 2001 the Peat Heritage Project was launched and aimed to record document and celebrate the recent heritage of the Avalon Marshes. The last 60 years have seen huge changes in the area and in people’s lives. Many of the memories and stories so typically handed down from generation to generation were disappearing as local characters either moved away from the area or died. With this in mind there was a degree of urgency in starting the project and it was decided that the most suitable way of collecting and recording the area’s rich history would be through oral history. The information for the project was collected through a series of recorded interviews with local people in their homes and in the peat landscape itself. This collection of recordings is accessible to the general public through an oral archive at the Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury. This book has the capacity to reveal just a small amount of the total recordings. Oral history is an invaluable record of social history. Despite its obvious geographical and landscape content much of the information collected depicted the lives of the individuals themselves.
