About the book >.>.> They arranged to meet in Tun Mustapha’s office at eleven o’clock. On hearing this Syed Kechik dictated to Habib Abdul Rahman the USNO Secretary-General who would later become state Minister of Finance the list of conditions for Stephens’ withdrawal and a series of resignation letters. For reasons of health Stephens was to retire as a member of Parliament as President of UPKO and from all ex officio posts in UPKO and the Sabah Alliance. He would agree not to indulge in any political activity at present or in future and would persuade UPKO members to cooperate closely with their partners in the Sabah Alliance. He would persuade UPKO to force the retirement of Peter Mojuntin as Secretary- General. He would send a letter to the Tunku apologizing for any misunderstanding that may have arisen and giving assurances that he was withdrawing permanently from politics. Finally he would direct the editor of his newspaper the Sabah Times to plug the bumiputra unity line in future editions and to push the idea that this could best be brought about by a merger of USNO and UPKO. When Stephens came into Tun Mustapha’s office these letters were still being typed in the adjoining office. The two men talked and joked for a half hour laughing and obviously skirting the issue at hand. Then Syed Kechik sent Habib in with the statement of conditions for Stephens’ exit and the letters of resignation. Tun Mustapha without a word pushed these over to Stephens. (LL)
