About the book >.>.> It has been claimed that Dr. Thomas Arnold was the first Head- master to centralise school activities round the school chapel but he did not take charge of Rugby School until 1828. John Wesley had insisted on the central position of the school chapel at Kingswood School. It is almost impossible to overestimate the advantage of having a school chapel in which the congregation is approximately homogeneous in age in intellectual development and outlook. However at the Wesleyan College Taunton despite the fact that there was a resident Chaplain the Directors maintained the traditional attendance of the boys twice on Sundays at the Temple Church a mile distant from the school. Any services at the school were held in the dining-hall. Disturbing news about the Governor’s health was reported at that Directors’ meeting on June 19th 1850 and when he died a a few months later the Rev. John Hobson was appointed Governor and Chaplain. He faithfully and successfully served the school for six years and then tendered his resignation. The Rev. John Williams was appointed his successor. He was followed by the Rev. Samuel Simmons who died in 1865. Then came the Rev. William P. Slater who remained at the school for twenty years He had a big family. John Allen the eldest son did well at the school matriculating 7th in Honours in English and Latin. William followed in 1867 Alfred in 1868 Ernest in 1870 Herbert in 1873 and Sidney in 1874. Ernest F.R.C.O. Mus. Doc. was a brilliant organist. He taught a little music before he left the school. He became assistant-organist at Exeter Cathedral and later was organist of Calcutta Cathedral for 27 years. (SP)
