About the book >.>.> Our guide decided we were too much to the left on the wrong peak so down we plunged again through the trees. Time was passing and we were still some way from the frontier and dawn was only three hours away. We were all very weary. In the dense mist the guide switched on his torch to help me find the right path and off we set again at a terrible pace. The first two men were all right because they could use the light of the torch but at the back I could see nothing and struggled desperately to keep up. We were walking sideways along the slope and every minute one of us fell. I know of no experience so exasperating and tempting to despair as that next half hour falling and getting up again running where we could to catch up unseen branches striking our heads and eyes and all the time our guide urging us to hurry. Still we were lost and kept on retracing our steps and to my mind going in a circle – now uphill-now downhill. The thought of losing all that height so laboriously gained was heartbreaking. I wondered whether the German patrols and observation posts on the crest would see the torch. Even in the mist its light seemed terribly naked under the dark of the trees. If it was seen I suppose a machine gun might have opened fire or dogs been sent out to detect us and bark our presence till the patrol arrived. There would be no killing or losing the dogs. (LL)
