About the book >.>.> The village of Kingskerswell owes its Th existence to its geology being situated at the driest marshiand crossing point on the route from St Marychurch to Totnes and Torbay. The royal Saxon manor was held by King Edward the Confessor and retained as such by William the Conqueror. The Parish Church was for centuries a chapel of ease of St Marychurch only gaining parochial independence in 1828. The oldest settled part of the village centres around Daccabridge the Parish Church and the ancient manor-house site of the De Moels and Dynham families with several outlying hamlets Odicknoll (a separate ancient manor) North and South Whilborough Stoneycombe Brookador and Huxnor. Twentieth-century changes have resulted in the loss of the ‘Willows’ area of the Barton Hall estate to Torquay as well as the gain of Aller from Abbotskerswell. The present benefice is united with that of Coffinswell. The community project group ‘Carsewella’ which takes the medieval spelling of the name Kingskerswell began in 1994 as a friendly association of like-minded people interested in recording and making available for the inhabitants of the villages of Kingskerswell and Coffinswell historical and archival material and photographs relating to the area. The Book of Kingskerswell outlines the history and development of the village from a medieval market centre to a vibrant modern community and includes many personal reminiscences and a wealth of photographs drawn together from across the community and presented here in a handsome volume for all to treasure. Although compiled by the members of Carsewella Local History Group and edited by Gerald Quinn this research could not have been possible without many contributions from the village and parish communities.
