About the book >.>.> Like most young motoring enthusiasts of the 1950s I always held the twin mar- ques of Rolls-Royce and Bentley in tremendous awe. To me a Mini owner with ambitions there was always something magnificent imperious mysterious and altogether superior about these cars-and I always wanted to know more. Those were the days when I was working in Coventryy which at the time seemed to be full of Jaguars Humbers Armstrong-Siddeleys and Alvis coupes – but there were very few of the cars from Crewe. So when I did see one of the latest Silver Clouds (or equally likely Bentley S-types) swishing past I always took notice. It wasn’t just their style lofty beautifully detailed arrogant even it was the sheer presence of the cars which seemed to hum with character. Nothing else was so likely to carve such an easy path through heavy traffic or to be able to park in forbidden zones without fear of penalty or to generate so much respect. My feelings did not include envy however – not any more. Post-war paranoia against wealthy or successful owners had fortunately almost disappeared (though you wouldn’t think so by checking out the high purchase tax rates imposed on cars at the time!) so once again the ownership and enjoyment of a big Rolls-Royce had become socially acceptable.
