About the book >.>.> Since the pioneer publication in 1892 of the archaeological catalogue of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (anon. 1892) museum archaeologists have been inspired to produce similarly useful catalogues illustrating their collections. Among the better known early publications are the catalogues of Devizes Museum (Cunnington & Goddard 1896 and Cunnington & Goddard 1934) Sheffield Museum (Howarth 1899) and the antiquities guides relating to the Stone Age Bronze Age Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon collections of the British Museum published between 1904 and 1926. Note should also be made of the modest and unillustrated catalogue published by Dr. Ernest Wilkins the Honorary Curator of the Isle of Wight Museum in 1852. A further catalogue which undoubtedly ranks as a tour de force is that compiled for Carisbrooke Castle Museum by Gerald Ambrose Sherwin F.S.A.. Sherwin’s unpublished manuscript modestly entitled his ‘Notes’ was bequeathed to the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1943. A typed version held in the Isle of Wight Sites and Monuments Record has proved invaluable in the compilation of this present catalogue. In the post-war years a new generation of provincial archaeological guide catalogues has appeared to prompt archaeological zeal. Foremost may be cited the Neolithic and Bronze Age Catalogue of Devizes Museum (Annable & Simpson 1964) followed by the Bronze Age metalwork catalogue of Salisbury Museum (Moore & Rowlands 1972). In the last decade a shift of emphasis may be detected as publications such as the Chichester Excavations series (Down & Rule 1971 Down 1974 1978 and 1979) provide what are in effect profusely illustrated guide-catalogues relating to Roman artefacts combined with a published archaeological record conveying the essential nuances by which the relationship and dating of most of the items are governed. A further move towards the independent publishing of small finds by archaeological units is marked by the Colchester Archaeological Report No. 2 (Crummy 1983). (LL)
