About the book >.>.> At the south eastern extreme corner of Cornwall is Rame Head a massive brooding pile of slate which juts out into the sea dominating the coastline amidst steep cliffs and jagged rocks. The Rame Peninsula is the name which is loosely applied to the narrow strip of land which lies immediately behind the coast washed on the northern flanks by the Lynher and Tamar Rivers and on the east side by the waters of Plymouth Sound. It comprises the ancient parishes of Maker Rame Saint John and Sheviock. This is Cornwall’s Forgotten Corner. Forgotten in the historical sense because part of it was once included in Devon. Forgotten in the modern sense because thanks to its isolation it escapes the tourist hordes as they grind their way over the Tamar Bridge to fight their way down county through the monoxide fumes to the caravan parks the amusement arcades and the trashy gift shops. Cornwall’s forgotten corner is uncommercialised; a haven for those who enjoy the leisure pursuits of the countryside rambling bird watching and sea angling. Thanks again to its relative inaccessibility it has so far largely escaped the ugly hand of the 20th century developer and retains much of its charm. How long it will remain unspoilt however is open to question for there have been extensive modern developments at Torpoint and other places despite the restrictions imposed on residents by the Ferry and high local unemployment. Visitors who wish to avoid delays at Torpoint are recommend- ed to use the Ferry bus service to Cawsand or Cremyll ferry. During the summer months there is also a ferry boat service to Cawsand beach from the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth. The Rame Peninsula is ‘Walkabout Country’ in its truest sense and this book has been written prin- cipally for the rambler or resident who wishes to learn something of the background to some spect- acular scenery. Not surprisingly the area abounds with artists and photographers whose work is in much demand. Together with walking the two other most (LL)
