About the book >.>.> I have been asked by locals on more than one occasion whilst compiling this book “why write a book on Enmore nothing ever happens here”! The fact of the matter is that though no great battles were ever fought in this parish it still has a unique history. What other village of the same size can boast of its very own castle a school founded almost 200 years ago a stately home and more than a few prominent statesmen. You may also ask “why should a Welshman choose this particular parish as the subject matter for a book”. The answer to this is threefold: Firstly my family moved to Enmore from Bridgwater around 1857 and thus our ties with the parish go back many years. Secondly apart from a few pages in Collinson’s History of Somerset and a chapter in the excellent Victoria County History of Somerset no comprehensive history of Enmore has ever been written. Thirdly in the course of my research stories of destroyed documents and photographs disposed of in “the annual spring clean” have become a recurring theme (or should I say ‘nightmare’). Hopefully this book will save for posterity some of the recollections and photographs which might otherwise have vanished forever (LL)
