About the book >.>.> THE difficult times that came to northeastern railroading in recent times would not have seemed strange to the Erie Railroad of old. The Erie was exploited robbed and stomped on more than once in its early days leaving it down and out. That old Erie had a way of coming back however and we entertain a like hope for today’s railroads in the old Erie territory. Looking back briefly the New York state legisla- ture chartered the New York & Erie Railroad in 1832. This charter stipulated that the road be entirely within the Empire state and not con- nect with any roads in Pennsylvania or New Jersey 2 without permission from New York. At any rate the six foot gauge of its rails would not allow interchange with any connections with standard guage trackage. The western terminal was to be Dunkirk on Lake Erie and in the east at Piermont on the Hudson River just north of the New Jersey line. River boats had to be em- ployed to transport passengers and freight south to Gotham. Eventually Erie did gain access to Jersey City N.J. from which more convenient marine connections could be made to Manhattan and other points around New York Harbor. (SP)
