None surpassed all envied this prime example of excellent steam design in the days when reams of publicity were courted for the Streamliners but the majority of train miles were being run off by steam on the head end. Eventually there were three classes of this queen of the rails each harboring its own features and good designs from its immediate predecessors. A fleet of forty-five super locomotives rushing incess- antly across the vast spaces of the West at speeds far in excess of the mile-a-minute gait. And generally speaking they were the finest to- comotives to ever grace the road’s ample roster con- sidering they were used in both freight and passenger service and had few modifications during a lifetime of heavy work.
