About the book >.>.> The title of this book may seem a paradox; everyone has seen faded chintz. But the earliest “chints” that came to Europe from India were colorfast and the few examples of these that have survived the centuries though mellowed are richly colored today. The Eastern knowledge of mordant dyeing was slow to pass to the West and many of the first English Continen- tal and later American-made chintzes copied the old patterns but could not equal the Indian dyes. Some of the treasured chintzes our ancestors pieced and appliqued so lovingly have changed their hue sometimes drastically yet the original often magnificent bedcoverings these quilters created are little diminished thereby. The glory of the quilts remains unfading. (LL)
