About the book >.>.> IN THESE ADVENTUROUS DAYS when the sky is by no means the limit travelers set off on all sorts of improbable expeditions. Nobody encounters raised eyebrows if he undertakes a safari into Africa or climbs glaciers in Alaska. It has been our recent experience however that the mention of one type of pilgrimage meets with a variety of emotions from scorn and in- credulity to raucous hilarity. Just announce that you are contemplating a gastronomic tour of the British Isles and you will see what we mean! A few years ago when we sought out some of our friends in England and told them of our projected travels the reaction was all but unanimous: “Listen old boy you’re not going to attempt a Bouquet of Britain!” or “You’ll never sell warm beer to the Americans!” A look of consternation pity amusement or pained solicitude passed over their faces depending upon how each regarded the institution of British cooking. Here and there were glimmerings of hope. After all they admitted one dines extremely well in London-in a select group of restaurants. Dover sole Angus beef and Stilton cheese are things of unrivaled splendor. There is nothing quite so good as steak-and-kidney pie when prepared by an English master. And the British are discriminating wine drinkers. But all this did not justify a series of epicurean tours promising the traveler a tempting dinner every night as similar jaunts in France and Italy had done. (MP)
